Kumarakom Attractions :-
Kumarakom is a small charismatic village located on the banks of the scenic Vembanad Lake. Kumarakom is considered as a tourist’s paradise. The beautiful lagoons, brooks, canals and waterways set amidst the coconut trees attract a lot of tourists to this region. The backwaters of the region are rich in marine life. There are several places worth to be explored.
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary
This bird sanctuary is the paradise for the bird watchers. The sanctuary is located at a distance of 15 kms from Kottayam, spread on an area of about 14 acres. The sanctuary is sited on the eastern banks of the Vembanad Lake home to about 180 species of birds. Apart from some common birds like the waterfowl, water ducks, cuckoos, wild ducks, Egret, Teal and some rare birds like Siberian Storks are also seen here at times. The best time to visit the sanctuary is between June and August.
The Vembanad Lake
There is a large network of rivers and canals in Kottayam, which empty up into the Vembanad Lake. The lake is a beautiful picnic spot and is has developed as a backwater tourism destination. There are several activities provided at the lake, which includes boating, fishing and sightseeing. Vembanad is a amongst the largest fresh water lakes in Indian subcontinent.
Aruvikkuzhi Waterfalls
This beautiful picnic spot is located at a distance of 18 km from Kottayam district. Here the waterfalls from a height of 100ft. a tinkling sound can be heard when the water passes through the landscape. There are large rubber plantations here where the tourists can sit under the shade.
Pathiramanal
Pathiramanal also known as the `Sands of Midnight` is a beautiful island on Vembanad Lake. This 10-acre island is located on the backwaters of the lake and serves as home to a wide range of rare migratory birds. This place is a paradise for the bird lovers.
Driftwood Museum
The driftwood museum displays a unique collection of fine quality driftwood articles prepared through a rare and innovative modern art form. A huge collection of root sculptures of various shapes and designs can be seen at the museum. The articles kept in the museum are collected from the islands of the Bay of Bengal and hence the museum is named Bay Island Driftwood Museum.
