As per the census of 2011, the town has about 2,282 residents. The people residing here belong to the Nepali, Tibetan, Lepcha, Bhutia, Limbu, Gurung, Sherpa, Tamang, and Newari tribes. The residents usually follow Buddhism. There is a Tibetan settlement in the town.
The place is known for its rich ethnic heritage. The local festival called Pang Lhabso is held here annually during August and September. At the fair, tourists get to savor the local delicacies, catch a glimpse of the hand-made craft items here and view a special native dance form called Chaam.
