Overview

Kerala Folklore Museum in Kochi is a vibrant cultural oasis where history and art come alive, making the interesting heritage of Kerala unforgettable. Situated in Thevara, Kochi, the museum is a treasure house of antique arts, artefacts, and traditional items, giving a unique peep into the heart of the rich folklore and cultural traditions of Kerala.

It is an ideal stop on any Kerala tour packages, capturing the essence of Kerala's vibrant past and presenting it with 5,000 rare artefacts, each carrying with it its own story. Constructed from the traditional architectural styles of Kerala, Malabar, and Tamil Nadu, the Kerala Folklore Museum itself is a work of art carved in wood and antique pillars over three floors.

The building itself is a history of Kerala's craftsmanship. The Kairali Hall on the ground floor has the architectural brilliance of Malabar with intricate woodwork and collections of unique sculptures. Ascend to the first floor's Kanthaari Hall, where you will find classical art forms and traditional items like ancient musical instruments, masks, and costumes used in traditional dances such as Theyyam, Kathakali, and Mohiniyattam.

The top floor is the Kalithattu or performance space, a traditional theatre setting where the essence of Kerala's performing arts is often brought to life. The major attraction of this Kerala Folklore Museum Kochi is the well-crafted artefacts. Each has its significance and importance in the artefacts, including items from 1,000 years back, rare manuscripts, coins, paintings, and many bronze statues.
