KANDY TEMPLE: It is the home of the Sinhala king called as the temple of tooth built in the sacred city of Kandy. This relic is recognized as a pious monument and has political importance in society.
ANCIENT CITY OF SIGIRIYA: This palace is made up of rocks and that is why tourists refer to it as the rocky outcrop of King Kassapa’s palace. The main attraction is the lion rock amongst the remains of the palace and forts. Visitors can walk around water reservoirs that showcase how rainwater harvesting was done ages back to effectively use rainwater for activities that involve using a huge volume of water.
OLD TOWN OF GALLE AND ITS FORTIFICATION: The Dutch built the fortified town of Galle in the 16th century. It sits approximately 130 km (81 miles) south of Colombo and is a town worth visiting. Thick stone ramparts, which were built to protect the goods stored there during the times of the Dutch East India Company in the 17th and 18th centuries, surround the historical buildings and churches. All the above monuments are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
NUWARA ELIYA: famous for its tea plantations is located at a height of 6100 feet above sea level. One of the favorite past-time of tourists here is the tour of a tea estate, especially during blossom time. The retreat also has some amazing waterfalls and scenic beauty.
BENTOTA: to the south of the country is a famous beach getaway. Activities like snorkeling, surfing, and sailing in the Indian Ocean offers some thrilling experiences to visitors here.
YALA: located at a distance of 240 km from the capital city of Colombo, this is a must-visit for all wildlife enthusiasts. Elephants, water buffaloes, and leopards are regularly sighted here.
ANURADHAPURA: The ancient city of Anuradhapura, also one of the most sacred cities of the country was established by Buddhist nuns. The place is full of excavated sites that offer views of palaces, temples, and monuments from the bygone eras.
