One of the most historical cities of Kerala is Thiruvananthapuram with a history dating back more than 2000 years. The history of Thiruvananthapuram has synchronized with the kingdom of Travancore that dominated this area for ages. In the early centuries of the Patinzer during the Sangam period, this area was under the Chera dynasty reign. It was also the trading post for spices, sandalwood, and ivory.

Prince Marthanda Varma, the ruler of Thiruvananthapuram in the 18th century was the real architect of Thiruvananthapuram as a leading city. He enlarged the kingdom of Travancore and made the city as capital of the kingdom in 1745. A monument constructed by Marthanda Varma that is famous in Thiruvananthapuram tourism is the famous Padmanabhaswamy temple which is considered as spiritual and cultural significance in the region. More to the religious history, it is named after a Lord Vishnu otherwise called Anantha- the reclining serpent.

Travancore retained a pretty much independent status during the colonial period and entered into a relationship with the British East India Company in the latter half of the 18th century. Social and cultural changes were observed in the reign of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal and Ayilyam Thirunal. Swathi Thirunal as a prominent literary and art connoisseur laid the foundation for making Thiruvananthapuram the centre for music, literature, and science.
