The word ‘chausath yogini’ means ’64 yoginis’ in Sanskrit and Hindi languages. The number 64 represents skills or arts that an individual can master – the 64 squares of a chessboard and 64 forms of Shiva and Shakti. This temple is constructed in 9th century by Queen Hiradevi of the Pratihara dynasty to give a tribute to her husband who died in the battle. It is not only a historical monument, but it is living temple where rituals are being performed by devotees and priests on a regular basis. The Yoginis are considered as the shakti goddess who can embody different aspects of Shakti such as art, wealth, love, and wisdom.
