One of the oldest and most revered religious destinations in India, Kalighat Temple ranks very high on the levels of religious and cultural importance. This temple is dedicated to the fierce yet benevolent form of Goddess Durga. Kalighat Temple in Kolkata, West Bengal attracts millions of devotees and tourists alike as an important element of any Kolkata Tour Packages.

It is believed to be one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, those cosmical places where various parts of Goddess Sati's body fell when her burnt body was being carried through the universe by Lord Shiva. It is supposed that it is the place where the right toe of Goddess Sati fell; thus Kalighat has become one of the prominent sites of pilgrim. This mythological legend forms the basis of the Kalighat temple History and has converted it into a place of worship for all those followers of Shaktism.

This temple dates back more than 2000 years ago but was built by the Sabarna Roy Chowdhury family in the early 19th century in its present form. The place was initially a ghat, or riverbank on the old course of the Hooghly River, which gave it the name "Kalighat." The river has shifted its course; the temple still symbolizes the spiritual heritage of the city.

The particular image of Goddess Kali at Kalighat is specific with three eyes, four hands and the tongue coming out from the mouth. Kalighat is that place where Kali is prayed with great dignity, where other statues of Kali are black stone with gold makeup on the garment over ears, shoulder and back and necklace and arms.

The temple is a spiritual abode and one of the prime spots in West Bengal Tourism that previews the tradition and religious culture of Kolkata. Several rituals and offerings from the devotees are seen on the vibrant premises of the temple.

Kalighat Temple History in Hindi has its own very interesting history and spiritualism attached to it, and a visit to the place has always been on the list of must-see, especially for those who visit West Bengal to explore its rich heritage. The place is one of those timelessly iconic blends of faith, tradition, and history turned into one compelling experience.
