Naina Devi Temple is one of the well-known Sakti Peeths of the Hindu Religion. This temple stands on one side of the beautiful Naini Lake and is a very famous tourist destination in Nainital. The history of this temple says that the Maa Naina Devi Temple gets its name from the Goddess Sati’s eyes which we call Nayan in Hindi.
The eyes of Devi fell at this place when Lord Vishnu cut her body into 51 different parts. The whole town (Nainital), the lake (Naini Lake) and the Naini temple, all three of them are named after the legend. The premises within the temple stand an old Peepal tree guarding the temple and providing shelter to the pilgrims. As we walk inside the temple there is the standing idol of Lord Hanuman who gives blessings and protects the goddess.
In the womb of the temple, there are two Nayan(eyes) in the centre which represent Naina Devi, Mata Kali to the left and Lord Ganesha to the right.
