The Conception and The Establishments

Ajmer was proposed to be found in the 7th century AD by Raja Ajaypal Chauhan, called Ajayameru, which translates to “invincible hill”. The city was the centre of power of the Chauhan dynasty and was embellished by the magnificent Taragarh fort, typically said to be one of the oldest hill forts in the world. This dynasty is known to have lasted up to the last quarter of the Twelfth century till Ajmer fell under the empire of Muhammad of Ghor thus bringing in the Delhi Sultanate rule.

History of Mughal Raj and the Ajmer Sharif Dargah

In 1556, Ajmer was brought under the Mughal Empire, and it became an important territory within the Mughal province, which was known as Ajmer Subah. The Mughals, especially Akbar the Great, valued Ajmer very much because of the Ajmer Sharif Dargah, which was dedicated to Khawaja Garib Nawaz, a Sufi saint.
