Shillong peaks located at a distance of 10 kms from the center of the city at the scenic southern limits of Shillong. It is an ideal picnic spot situated an altitude of 6445 feet above sea level. This is the highest point in the state. The peak is considered to be the abode of the Khasi deity U Blei Shillong--the creator and protector of the Kingdom. A magnificent view of the Himalayas can be seen from the peaks when the skies are clear. A panoramic view of the scenic landscape and the city can be seen from the peak. In the evening the city lights from the top appear like a star-studded abyss.
At the height of 6449 ft or 1965 m above sea level, Shillong Peak is the highest point of Shillong. It offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city, the Himalayas, its waterfalls as well as of the Bangladesh plains. A telescope is available for tourists to get a bird's eye view. Trekking up to this semi-circular Shillong Peak is highly recommended for the best views but it is often bounded by heavy fog.
According to historians, Shillong is named after this hill. As per the locals, the patron deity 'Leishyllong' resided at the hill and protects the city against all evils. Besides, the top of the Shillong Peak has a sacred spot that is dedicated to U Shulong and special rituals are organized here in each spring to honor the spirit of U Shulong.
An ideal retreat for visitors, the location also features a radar station of the Indian Air Force.
Due to security reasons at the airbase, travelers need to show their original ID cards and surrender their cameras at the check post before entering into the viewpoint area.
