People / Population: The total population calculated in the year 1995 was 76.77 lakhs. In India, this state is one of the smallest in population. It accounts for less than one percent of the total population of the country. Around 12 million people live in Kashmir out of which roughly 70% are Muslims.
Religions: In the Vale of Kashmir,95% of the people are Muslims, the majority being Sunnis while in Jammu 65% are Hindus. In Ladakh, 52% are Lamaistic Buddhists. Most follow Mahayana Buddhism of the Vajrayana. The Red Hat Drukpa(Kaygupa)sect of Tibetan Monastic Buddhists enjoys real patronage. The most dominating religion is Islam followed by Hinduism and Buddhism. Other majority religions such as Christianity, Islam, and Sikhism are also present followed by people in small numbers.
