Kamakhya Temple is the most famous place in Assam which attracts a large number of visitors every during the Ambubachi festival. This temple is dedicated to the goddess Skati located in the Nilachal Hills and overlooks the Brahmaputra River. According to the Hindu scriptures, there are four important Shakti Peethas (Temples with the highest powers of divinity) in the country and Kamakhya Temple is one of them.

The temple celebrates the power of the women to give birth and is well-known for the Tantrik Vidhiya. It was constructed and reconstructed multiple times between the 8th and 17th Centuries by the Koch King Naranarayan after the original temple was destroyed.

This temple does not contain any type of idol but a rock fissure that is considered to be the yoni (symbol of female genitalia) of the goddess. During the Ambubachi Mela, the temple celebrates the goddess’s annual menstruation cycle and thousands of devotees come across the country.

The temple is renowned not only for its religious significance but also for its vibrant traditions, rich cultural heritage, and the mystical aura that surrounds it. Explore this place with Guwahati Holiday Packages.
