Cherrapunji is an absolute wonder for tourists who seek a combination of natural beauty, cultural diversity and novel experiences. This high-altitude town is famous for its green landscapes, boundless waterfalls and rich culture which provide a lasting memory to every visitor. Whether you are an adventure lover, shopaholic or food enthusiast, Cherrapunji has something different to offer you.

The tallest plunge waterfall in India, Nohkalikai Waterfalls, is the most iconic destination in Cherrapunji, with a height of 340 meters (1,115 ft). The waterfall is fed by rainwater collected on the summit of a small plateau and is most powerful during the monsoon season. Its Khasi name, “Nohkalikai”, which means "the fall of Ka Likai" or “Jump of Ka Likai”, adds some mystery to it when this tragedy tells about Ka Likai’s story. She dived into the Kynrem Falls nearby which was later named Nohkalikai in her memory. During such occasions photographers gather at view points that enable them to take good shots of both the fall and its environs at large.

For people interested in geological features, Mawsmai Cave should not miss their itinerary. Found just 4 km from Cherrapunji, this limestone cave exhibits impressive stalactites coupled with stalagmites inside it. The cave is well-lit, allowing visitors to marvel at its natural beauty without the need for additional lighting. At its accessible section, over 150 meters long, the cave is worth trying for learners and experts in spelunking. With its narrow corridors and distinct formations, the cave serves as both an enlightening and thrilling experience, displaying the marvels of Meghalaya’s underground wonders.

Trek to Double Decker Living Root Bridge
The trek to Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat village, Meghalaya, is distinct as well as demanding. Starting with a fall of over 3,500 steps through thick forests and across multiple suspension bridges onto streams, the journey takes off. The staircase is steep and narrow in some places making the walk physically demanding. You will also pass by small villages, natural swimming pools and even an individual living root bridge before reaching the main attraction.

Once you get to Nongriat you will be welcomed by a sight that is hard to believe. It is a double-decker living root bridge made by intertwining the roots of rubber trees together over hundreds of years. The river which the bridge crosses is crystal clear and there’s a little waterfall close by, hence creating such serene surroundings. Tourists can walk across the bridge while they are amazed at this fantastic achievement of nature and man combined. The return path climbs sharply up 3500 steps but it is just as challenging as it is fulfilling, providing breathtaking views of the surrounding scenery.
