Basistha Temple also known as the Vasistha Temple is an ashram of the Maharishi Vashishta located in the Southeast area of the capital city of Assam which was constructed by the Ahom King Rajeshwar singh in the year 1764. The king also gifted 835 bighas of land to the ashram.
This ashram is located on the outskirts of Garbhanga Forest also known as the butterfly reserve. The Garbhanga Forest includes a large number of tuskers(elephants) population. The ashram shows a magical waterfall. The Vashishta Ashram is composed of a temple and a cave.
It is said by locals that the Maharishi Vashistha meditated here and last his breadth. The cave is located about 5 kilometres inside the ashram. The ashram shows a temple located on the mountain streams, these streams originated from the Meghalaya hills which became river Vashishta.
The ashram shows three distinct temples which are dedicated to three different deities Lord Brahma Vishnu Maheshwara, Ganesha temple and the inner sanctum (garbagriha) dedicated to Maharishi Vashishta. This beautiful place can be enjoyed by Guwahati Tour Packages.
